Children to get NIDs after birth

The government will issue NIDs (national identity cards) to children after they are born.

The provision has been kept at the draft law titled “National Identity Registration Law 2022”, which was approved at a Cabinet Division meeting on Monday.

The meeting was held at the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) with Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in the chair.

As per the new rules, the home ministry’s Security Service Division, from now on, will distribute NIDs instead of the Election Commission (EC).

The unique number of birth certificates will be carried forward as the NID number of newborns.

Speaking at the press, Cabinet Secretary Khandker Anwarul said, “NIDs will be provided to children after they are born. The birth certificate and NID number will be the same.”
