Daily wage for tea workers set at Tk170

Minimum daily wage for tea plantation workers has been fixed at Tk170. Apart from this, other benefits will increase at a proportionate rate. So, the daily wage of a worker will be Tk450-Tk500.

The decision was taken in a meeting between Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and tea estate owners.

Prime Minister’s Principal Secretary Ahmed Kaykaus briefed reporters after the meeting on Saturday evening (August 27).

He said, after discussing everything, the Prime Minister fixed the daily wage of tea workers at Tk170.

Providing explanation, Ahmed Kaykaus said that tea industry is given various benefits. The tea state owners bear those. Plucking bonus, annual leave allowance, festival allowance etc. will be increased at proportionate rate. The total daily wage will be Tk450 to Tk500 per day with the cost of subsidized rations, medical facilities, pension of retired tea workers, education of children.

The Prime Minister has asked all the workers to join work from tomorrow. She will talk to the workers through video conference soon, the Principal Secretary added.

Earlier, a 13-member delegation of tea garden owners joined the meeting with the Premier around 4:00pm at Ganabhaban.
