EC finalizes to procure two lakh EVMs

The Election Commission (EC) has undertaken a project of Tk 8,711 crore for the purchase of new Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) for the upcoming 12th Jatiya Sangsad ( JS – National Assembly) elections.

Election Commissioner Md Alamgir told reporters after a commission meeting held at EC Bhaban in the capital’s Agargaon on Monday.

It is learned that about 2 lakh EVMs will be purchased, along with proper storage of the equipment, maintenance warehouse training and manpower creation, which will be done under the proposed scheme. In all, the potential cost has been estimated at around Tk 8,500 crore. The proposal will now be sent to the Planning Commission.

EC Alamgir said it has been decided to conduct EVMs in the maximum of 150 seats in the upcoming parliamentary elections. With the EVMs we currently have, it is possible to conduct elections in about 70-75 seats. If remaining elections are to be held, i.e., if elections are to be held in 150 seats then we will need more EVMs.
