RCMP Traffic Services East arrests six individuals for impaired driving in two days

Six individuals were arrested for impaired driving offences by RCMP Traffic Services East during traffic stops that were conducted between December 30 – 31, 2022.

On December 30, RCMP Traffic Services partnered in with RNC Traffic Services and conducted checkpoints in Holyrood and on Pitts Memorial Drive. In Holyrood, two men tested positive for cannabis on roadside drug screening equipment and were arrested by RCMP Traffic Services East. Both were transported to St. Clare’s Mercy Hospital in St. John’s where blood samples were obtained.

During the checkpoint on Pitts Memorial Drive, a suspended driver was arrested by RCMP Traffic Services East after testing positive for cannabis on roadside drug screening equipment. The man was transported to the RNC in St. John’s and completed a drug influence evaluation. He was issued a further licence suspension and the vehicle was seized and impounded.

On December 31, 2022, RCMP Traffic Services East arrested three more individuals for impaired driving during checkpoints in Holyrood and Bay Bulls. At approximately 1:00 a.m. in Holyrood, a man was arrested for drug impaired driving. He was transported to Holyrood detachment and refused to complete a drug influence evaluation. He now faces charges of impaired driving and refusal and is set to appear in court at a later date. His licence was suspended and the vehicle was seized and impounded.

At approximately 5:00 p.m. that day in Bay Bulls, police arrested a driver after he failed a roadside breath test for alcohol. The man was transported to the detachment and provided further breath samples that were above the legal limit. He faces charges of impaired driving and is set to appear in court at a later date. His licence was suspended and the vehicle was seized and impounded.

At approximately 9:00 p.m. that same day, a woman was arrested after testing positive for cannabis on roadside drug screening equipment. She was transported to St. Clare’s Mercy Hospital in St. John’s where a blood sample was obtained.

In cases where a blood sample was obtained or a drug influence evaluation was completed, officers await the results of the testing to determine if charges of impaired driving are appropriate.
