Ottawa, ON – The Hon. Candice Bergen, Leader of the Conservative Party of Canada and the Official Opposition, released the following statement on Onam:

“As the Indian monsoon season winds down and it’s time to welcome the harvest, I’d like to wish Malayalees in Canada, India, and around the world a happy Onam.

“Onam signifies peace and harmony. This vivid festival is a commemoration of the glorious and inspiring past of King Mahabali who was renowned for his wisdom and generosity. It also serves as a celebration of the gathering of a plentiful harvest for people across Kerala.

“The flavours of Sadya and the musical beats of Pulikali provide an amazing opportunity to recognize the unique culture of Kerala and honour the achievements of the Malayalee community here in Canada. As the world recovers from a global pandemic, the ten days of gathering, food, and dancing will be all the more joyous.

“I’d like to thank the entire Malayalee community for all that you do to share your heritage and culture with your fellow Canadians. Your contributions make our country a more vibrant and exciting place to live.

“On behalf of the Conservative Party of Canada, Onam Ashamsakal!”
